Another solution, used by the bathyscaphe "Trieste," some other submersibles, and in some SCUBA divers buoyancy compensators, uses lead shot in a funnel like container with a plug (or valve) on the bottom. Open the plug and out goes the lead shot.

Shot pouches that can be dropped are also used in buoyancy compensators.
