The snorkelers had aircraft altimeters to measure the pressure/vacumn in the boat. Thus as Fritz stated, they cruised at a altitude indication of 1800 feet (actually a vacumn) and the engines automatically shut down at a vacumn which equalled an altitude of 6500 feet. The altimeter was marked in feet, so we "flew" by the altimeter.

And yes, he was referring to an F4 climb rate as a rate at which the needles moved from 1800 to 6500 feet when the planesmen dipped the headvalve. Nothing cleans your sinuses better, or plunks you ear drums like a cycling head valve on a snorkeler.

Gee it was fun, when I was younger.
