Fuel Quality

We now know that the Graf Spee was lost when her on-board refinery was destroyed. She needed it since her Diesel engines needed better quality fuel than her tanks held.

What quality of Diesel fuel did U-Boats use? How would it compare to modern #2 Diesel fuel in viscosity? Given the fuel was mixed with sea water; how was it filtered before use?
