The Atlantic and Pacific theaters are difficult to compare. As is a comparison between German and American losses.

For one the duration of the war was different.

The Germans fought for 68 months while the Americans fought for 45 months.

The theaters were also different. With the exceptions of extended missions to America and Africa/Med, many of the German Sub operations were relatively close to heavily defended coast lines where air patrols were more common.

The Allies in the Atlantic theater were more advanced in their airborne offensive radars. The American submarines in the Pacific theater were more advanced in their defensive radars. Also the Japanese did not have such technologies as the Leigh Light, which was very successful. Although it had limited use, the use of Yehudi camouflage helped tip the advantage to Allied Aircraft in the Atlantic. The Japanese did not have the capability of Yehudi camouflage on their anti-submarine aircraft.

An interesting article that discusses US submarine losses to Japanese Air attacks can be found at [www.valoratsea.com]

As to your comment that relatively few US Subs were lost to Air Attack, please consider the following:

A total of 52 US Submarines were lost to enemy action during WWII. Of those 52, 13 of them were lost to air attacks. This represents a 25% loss due to air attack.

It is true that more German Submarines were sunk due to Air Attacks, but that number must be considered with not only the larger number of German Submarines, the length of the individual war efforts, and the operating environments
