Hi,
I was in hurry too much, when I was writing about U 178 war patrols.
During her second patrol she was refueled from MV Charlotte Schliemann:
"U 178, 198, 181, 196, 197 and 177 have increased their supplies to about
420 - 440 cubic meters from the tanker "Schliemann", and taken the appropriate
provisions on board."
[uboatarchive.net]
The date is unclear for me - she was ordered to do it on 20th June, she reported on 29th June.
During her third patrol she was also refueled from MV Charlotte Schliemann:
"U 178 reported that U 510 and U 178 took supplies on board from the tanker "Schliemann"
as anticipated. U 178 took on cipher material, (in operation until June, inclusive), provisions
for 90 days, 400 cubic meters of fuel, also 19 tons of rubber."

The date is also unclear for me - she was ordered to do it on 26th January, she reported on 30th January.
Informations on Charlotte Schliemann:

So my first information, that ship Python was the last surface supply vessel is not true.
U 178 was indeed bad example. U 181 also during her third patrol from Bordeaux
to Penang was refueled from Schliemann as well as U 196 (second war patrol from La Pallice to Penang).
But check the route of the U 861 on her first patrol from Kiel to Penang.
No refueling mentioned in BdU KTB.
U 862 made her first patrol from Narvik to Penang also without refueling.
(I will check above boats in few books in the evening, and will let know).
Additionally, various sources say, that the range for type IXD2 boats (at 12 knots) is about 23700 nm.
I have measured distance from Kiel to Japan, and it is around 18000 nm.
So I think, that the answer for your second question is still positive.
