uss growler

Hello. I want to build a model of the USS Growler when Gilmore was in command at the time of the ramming of the japanese ship in February 1943. I am getting conflicting stories concerning the configuration of the conning tower which was on the boat at the time. Does anyone know whether the original "Gato" class conning tower was present or the motified version which I believe was the "Bluefish" design. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank u much. Dave B.
