My Grandfather, Dennis Ryder, was on HMS Hartland during the attack on Oran, and is still alive and well in Birmingham. He doesn't talk about it very often, but it sounds like they had a pretty rough night! On a positive note, he says that after they were taken as POW, they were treated very well, with no hostility. He even recalls playing cards and drinking with their captors. My father managed to get an original copy of a newspaper of the time, recalling the attack, with a great picture of what both the Hartland and the Walney were subjected to. MY Grandfather has it framed on his living room wall.
