Gentlemen: My late father, Commmander Edric Knapton, was the CO of HMS Loch Glendhu from the time she was commissioned -- in Rosyth, I think -- and at the action against U-Boot 1024. He was decorated with the DSC for the action. He informed me that once HMS Loch More had taken 1024 on tow, a sea got up and the tow rope broke under the strain of that and of the damage to 1024 caused by the depth charges that brought her to the surface. The U-Boot was taken under tow because it was one of the latest electric vessels developed by the German Navy, and the Admiralty was keen to examine the technology used. The plan was to take her to Rosyth. Had this plan been successful, my father's decoration would have been DSO, and presumably the decorations of other crew members would also have been changed accordingly, with positive consequences for their Naval pensions. Apparently, the captain, Hans-Joachim Gutteck, shot himself rather than be captured, an event which distressed my father for the rest of his life. A family friend, also a Naval Officer but a few years junior to my father, has told me that this action became a classic case study in RN anti-submarine warfare for many years afterwards. Indeed, in the 1950's my father was appointed CO of HMS Vernon and HMS Defiance, the two principal AS training ships in the Navy at that time. To his life-long regret my father was retired from the Navy in 1959. My apologies for only posting this message now: sadly, I had not seen the forum before. Please let me know if you feel I can help further: I have a super photo of HMS Loch Glendhu. Best wishes, Guy K
