I've seen suggestions that the "Captains" were close relatives of the "River" class frigates, but with different (and disparate) engineering arrangements. No-one seems quite sure whose idea the 3" "Elephant gun" they carried was, but those I've spoken to think it was a bad move, and that a couple of 4" as in the Rivers would have been a much better armament. Care to comment on that?
