"The U.S. Navy is in undisputed command of the seas. We may never again be in a better position to build on our strengths, innovate and experiment, and push the envelope of operational art and technological genius. The next revolution at sea will not be driven solely by the challenges of our dangerous world, but also by the genius of Americans answering the bell when opportunity comes calling."
I don't know about "undisputed." There are some pretty damned tough whales out there, believe me.
"DD(X) will project decisive combat power over land at long range using such fire-support systems as tactical Tomahawk, the Advanced Gun System, and possibly an electromagnetic rail gun."
Why don't they just quit the ocean for outer space?
A "100-nautical-mile-range Advanced Gun System (AGS)?!?" That sort of projectile range hasn't been heard of since the "Paris Gun" of WWI fame. That gun's shell literally exited the Earth's atmosphere at its apogee. Er, the USN is going to get back in the 'naval artillery' business? Sounds like that would make a term like 'high-tech throwback' a non-oxymoron. ;-)
Seriously, great link Dan, thanks.
