COVENTRY left England on 19 August 1940, sailing from Plymouth for Greenock to join the escort to an Atlantic convoy; she was detached from this to join Force 'H' at Gibraltar, arriving at Gib. 27 August 1940. From then on she was stationed in the Mediterranean or Red Sea until she was finally sunk in September 1942. The info. about her being torpedoed on 13 Dec. 1940 is accurate. She was under repair at Alexandria until 20 January 1941

It does not necessarily mean that the date of 14 December is incorrect - in fact that is the date that she arrived back at Alexandria under tow for repairs. It just means that up until that date Chatham barracks (HMS Pembroke) were responsible for his pay etc. He must have been 'in transit' for a while before then, the 14th being the first opportunity he had to actually join her.
