All,

One of the U-boats I've been researching came very close to sinking the Kennebec Class Fleet Oiler USS Winooski II (AO-38)supporting the landings off Fedahla Morocco for Operation Torch.

U-173 penetrated the destroyer screen and fired a spread of torpedoes at the anchored fleet.

It was a good shot by Schweichel, hitting Winooski just abaft of the bridge in the number 6 tank, but luckily for Winooski that tank had no fuel and was ballasted with sea-water.

U-173 was originally supposed to patrol the Caribbean and was diverted to respond to the invasion. Had she been equipped with magnetic detonators rather than contact, Winooski may have suffered a different fate (along with the destroyer Hambleton).
