The incident was reported in The Times on 28 December 1955 -(it shows the correct date to have been in 1955, not '56) ,and they have two men being drwoned, with two injured survivors. The article reads:
"Heavy Seas at Malta
Two Seamen Drowned
from our own Correspondent
Malta Dec. 27
Naval headquarters here have released the names of two seamen who were swept overboard from the fast frigate Ulysses and are now listed as missing, presumably drowned. They are Ordinary Seaman David John Foster, of Leicester, and Able Seaman Joseph Donald Mercer of Wirral, Cheshire. Also swept overboard, but picked up later, were Able Seaman Edward Connor of Lancaster, now seriously injured at the RN Hospital, Bighi, and Able Seaman Dawson, slightly injured, who is also at Bighi.
The Ulysses was leaving harbour in a storm yesterday morning when the men were swept overboard from the fo'sle. Bad weather and vicious seas hindered rescuers. Many others on the Ulysses foc'sle were also injured.
Yesterday's savage seas and gale force wnds have caused considerable damage to private and public property in Malta"
