My Father - Stanley Frederick Burrow - was the Warrant Gunnery Officer on HMS Valentine when she was bombed on the Scheldt estury. He told me that the ship ended up embedded in a dyke wall and as she still had munitions aboard, it was too dangerous to move her at that time. Dad was injured with a bomb splinter in his leg, which would have involved amputation but was saved by a German POW doctor. He was 'Mentioned in Dispatches' for ensuring the code books were destroyed. The Captain of the Valentine was an Australian hostilities only officer - Dad described him as "a bit of a B......"
