<HTML>Stephen,

I have an idea what the incident might be -- a somewhat fanciful retelling of a fight between the Q-ship (armed decoy vessel) HMS Prize and the U 93 on April 30, 1917 off the Scillies. The Prize was a 199 ton sailing vessel armed with three concealed 12-pounder (3 inch) guns.

The Prize was badly damaged in the exchange and had to be towed in. Three prisoners were taken, however, including U 93's CO, Kplt. Edgar Freiherr Speigel von und zu Peckelsheim. U 93 did not sink though, (though the British and von und zu Peckelsheim thought at the time that she did). Despite being unable to dive, U 93 made it home on the surface.

You'll find an account of the action in Tony Bridgeland's "Sea Killers in Disguise" and other books on Q-ships.

Best wishes,

Michael</HTML>
