Alemap,

The story as you relate it is generally correct but with a key detail left out. Völker (spelling per Messimer’s book "Verschollen") signed on to the Swedish bark Ironstrop at Hull. When that vessel was stopped and examined by U 16 in the North Sea on October 1, 1915, Völker identified himself to the boarding officer.

Völker was lost on U 44.

A war pilot was a merchant marine officer taken on board to help identify landmarks and merchant ships while on patrol.

Best wishes,

Michael
