Art,

I am one of two people that handle the WWI information for uboat.net and also work with divers to locate and identify missing U-boats.

This incident has come up before. I am not sure which U-boat the USN subchasers attacked (if any). However, it is certain that no U-boat was sunk in the attack. While there are a number of U-boats that did go missing in September 1918, all where still in the North Sea or in port and/or in contact via radio at least through September 8, 1918. All U-boats losses from February 1918 through early september 1918 around the British Isles are now well understood, leaving either survivors, massive evidence of destruction, and/or a wreck.

It has been suggested that the action you describe may have been against the UB 87 after it damaged the troopship Persic (liner), however, that action occurred further out to sea (40 miles NW Scilllys 50°16'N, 07°22'W).

Best wishes,

Michael
