BIRUTA

Yves,

I have difficulty accepting that BIRUTA was actually sunk by UB 57. The sinking is listed as being 8 miles NW3/4W Calais on August 6, 1918. UB 57 sailed on August 3 and should have been well west of Calais by the 6th; in her last transmission and hour before she was mined, UB 57 claimed 3 ships sunk of an estimated 15,000 grt. These would presumably be CLAN MAX VEY, GLENLEE, and CITY OF BRISBANE.

Bendert does not credit UB 57 with sinking BIRUTA; I don't have Spindler V but the index you send doesn't list this ship either. Tennebt also credits and unknown U-boat. I would suspect that BIRUTA hit a mine...

Best wishes,
Michael
