Joe,

Oliver and I looked in to this a few years back. In our view, Spindler gets the sinkings for UB 32, UC 21, and U 106 on their final patrols wrong.

U 106 should be credited with sinking Contest and damaging City of Lincoln. She radioed in while homebound claiming 10,000 tons sunk (!) but is not credited with sinking anything by Spindler. (Spindler credits UB 32 for damaging City of Lincoln but does not mention the destroyer.)

An objection to crediting U 106 is that Spindler says her patrol area was the North Channel. However, U 43 was in contact with U 106 near Bishops Rock on Sept. 23, 1917 (!).

So tonnage claims by the most capable boat that can be demonstrated to be in the area.

Also, the locaton of where the two ships were hit is probably a little west for a UBIIs patrol area that late in the war.

Best wishes,
Michael
