Natter,

Schwieger unfortunately only wrote "G-Torpedo" in his war diary. With the G torpedoes it is not as simple as you wrote. There was the G AV, G AVK, G AV**, G/3 AV, G/6 AV, G/6 AV*, G/6 AV**, G/6 D and a few more. The G/7 and its variants were not only fired by surface ships. It was also used on submarines. The H/8 was fired exclusively from surface ships.
The bronze torpedo, as the name suggests, was made of bronze and had a diameter of 45 cm, the G torpedoes were made of steel and had a diameter of 50 cm. U 20 had both torpedo types on board. To be able to fire the bronze torpedo, a rail had to be mounted in the torpedo tube to compensate for the difference in calibre. This torpedo tube could then only fire 45 cm torpedoes. There is so much to write about the torpedo armament of the Imperial German Submarines that it would go beyond the scope of this reply.
