One of the reasons it was kept secret was to avoid letting the Japanese know whether it worked.
There was one case where a family on a picnic exploded a bomb by accident and some were killed - Until Sept 11 the only cases of war casualties on the US mainland since the Civil War.
I seem to remember hearing that one of the bombs damaged an electric substation and knocked out the power going into the US plutonium manufacturing facility at Hanover for a few hours.
Also, there was talk of using the balloon bombs to spread bio-weapons like anthrax, but the war ended before anyone went that far.
I am sure there are a number of sources on it if you look.</HTML>
