<HTML>Hi Jamie -
There was a TV programme about diving a previously unidentified u-boat off America, and discovering that it was U869, believed lost near Gibraltar, I think. The U-boat Archive in Germany only believed the divers when they brought back a bakelite label from the wreck with the number on it (actually from the main bilge-pump), which they kindly presented to the Archiv and is now in a glass case there downstairs.
Reason for it being there: the boat had been sent to the US coast like many others, but clearly never received the order instructing them to return to Europe (which it had been wrongly assumed they had received and obeyed); the boat is thought to have been accidentally sunk by one of its own torpedos while on patrol.
The boat wasn`t retrieved, BTW; one or two artefacts were brought up, including a knife with a crew-member`s name on it. Apart from anything else the boat is a war grave. It also claimed the life of (I think) at least one of the divers who identified it.
Hope this strikes a bell !
Cheers
