In the latter stages of the war it was the common for the U-Boat ccommand to send the occassional u-boats on long range missions. The most common areas were off the Canadian coast, occassionly a boat would operate in the carribean or off the U.S coast, and in the south atlantic and Indian oceans. The main reason was that uboats operating in far distant waters would require the allies to continue to keep their anti uboat forces especially aircraft occuppied away from the main theatre of operations. Even 1 or 2 uboats operating in an area tied down large resources. If they managed to sink 1-2 ships it was a bonus.
