Hi. I don't think it was anyone thing that caused the loss of 40 boats in May '43. rather a combination of things.
Firstly u-boat losses and damages had started to increase during March-April as the allies began to bring their resources together.
The allies were clearly reading German radio traffic and able to divert appropiate resources to threatened convoys and areas. These included support groups, long range radar equipped aircraft, and carrier based aircraft. Shipboard radar and HFDF equipment was able to locate nearby uboats and concentrate their forces against them.
In the transit areas of the uboats, coastal command began carefully designed continuous patrols catching the uboats both inward and outward. This increased patrolling was also conducted off Gibraltar, in the Meditteranean and along the eastern seaboards of Nth & sth America.
As the allies had more escorts and aircraft available they were able to maintain their attacks on individual contacts where as earlier contacts were left due to the need to return to the convoys.
Regards
