<HTML>Hi Bill

I´d guess that U-boats as any other ships do, used
knot-meters, in order to measure the navigated distance and speed,
regardless she was surfaced or submerged.

Knot-meters can be of various types, mechanical, electric, pressure type, electronic, etc.

Best regards</HTML>
