She was carring 4,408 troops and 248 nurses. Left the Clyde on 11th Dec. 1942. She was torpedoed forty miles north of Oran at 2.30am on 21st Dec. Fire broke out in the engine room and spread to a hold containing ammunition. Six crew and a number of passengers were killed, the remainder being taken off. Salvage tug towed her but she sank 12 miles from Oran at 4.20am on 22nd December 1942.
The STRATHALLAN was owned by Penisular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co., was built by Vickers Armstrong in 1938 was 23,722-tons, turbine engines, devoloped 4912hp, did 21-knots and had dimensions of 639.5 feet by 82.2ft by 33.6ft.Captain was J.H.Briggs CBE.
