A few quick points:

1. Uboat.net has a WWI forum... (hint)

2. The WWI U-boats that operated off the U.S./Canadian coast in 1918 were the U 151, U 152, U 155, U 156, U 140, and U 117.

3. The Diamond Shoals Light-vessel was sunk on August 6, 1918. The Merak and Stanley M. Seaman were also lost off Cape Hatteras at about the same time. I have seen references to the U 140 being the boat responsible, but that comes from a somewhat unreliable source.
