<HTML>Hi Matty,

Doenitz had started 'Paukenschlag' (Operation Drumbeat) by January of 1942 - sending a clear message to the US that he intended to strike hard against the allies on both sides of the pond. The boats operating areas were wide ranging - from the coast off New York down to Florida and across to the Carribbean. A great deal of the tonnage sunk off the coast of the US were tankers.

The boats in Drumbeat were withdrawn to station sou'west of the Azores by May of '43. I would suggest your time frame is therefore Jan '42 to May '43 if the place / setting is off the coast of the US.

If not, you are looking at a convoy which makes things somewhat easier - if you had either the ship's name, a date or the convoy number!

However, the incident sounds unlikely as there was obviously a survivor to tell the tale - and that would almost certainly have earned the U-boat Captain in question a mention as a war criminal. Without a survivor, how would the story have been told?

Hmm, I'd like to ask for more details if you can supply them - such as location, ship's name and so on - and from there someone here will be able to tie down a particular boat to that area.

Sorry I can't be of more help - and good luck in your quest!

Aye,

John</HTML>
