From 3 September 1939 until 20 May 1941
Losses caused by U-boat mines are included
Vessels damaged and sunk by different U-boats are only counted once. (i.e. U-47 damaged one ship and U-99 sank it only the sinking is counted).
Merchant ships (including auxiliary warships like armed merchant cruisers and ships which were declared a total loss):
Sunk: 833 ships with 3.948.419 grt
Damaged: 55 ships with 390.371 grt
Captured: 5 ships with 8.748 grt
Military ships:
Sunk: 15 ships with 63.413 tons (includes one aircraft carrier, one battleship, four destroyers and four submarines)
Damaged: 6 ships with 116.180 tons (three battleships, two cruisers and one corvette)
