Also according to Schäffer 's book U-977 was decided to head westwards for Argentina across the Atlantic. She was igoring her orders from Dönitz to surrender, as the U-boat war came to an end on 4th May 1945.
The decision to head for Argentina was made after the surrender orders was gaven out from Germany. As about 30 of U-977's crew agreed & 2 wanted to go to Spain and the other 16 men of whom had families, wish to return back to Germany.
These men were put ashore the next night near Bergen, leaving the boat without the most experience men. After 66 days submerged, the living conditions on both boat & crew was getting very bad. However, a radio report call on 10/7/45 from U-530's arrival at Mar del Plata, was a great encouragement of the crew on U-977. The boat finally sunk on 13/11/46 somewhere off the US east coast.
