some type VII U-boats came for refuelling and refitting to Pola (Pula) which was an important naval base with consistent facilities. Pola (Pula) was a submarine base since WW1 and in its shipyard (Scoglio degli Ulivi) subs have been built for at least three different Navies.
Adriatic Sea practically is a bay and Otranto canal was quite effectively controlled by the Regia Marina so the U-boats have been troubled only by air raids in 1941-43. Midget ones were very active in 1944-45 since an Allied landing was expected in the northern area of it
