<HTML>The obituary section of my local paper indicates Chester Nimitz has passed away in a Massachusetts retirement home. The individual referenced in this report is not the United States Pacific fleet commander of the second world war, but his son -- who was a submarine officer during the war. Following the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, you may recall, Admiral Nimitz held his change of command ceremony on a submarine to symbolize the importance of the submarine in the Pacific war.
My local newspaper frequently contains errors on such matters, but I will repeat the gist of their report for others, who may have better information: The younger Nimitz graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1936, and was awarded three silver stars for wartime service in submarines. He became eligible for retirement in 1957; and, to his father's disappointment, left the Navy to work for the electronic firm Texas Instruments.
The younger Nimitz is referred to as a rear admiral, but that is probably a rank conferred upon retirement rather than held on active duty. Arizona Senator McCain is presently the best known individual to reconsider a family naval tradition.</HTML>
