<HTML>The younger Nimitz's rank was, indeed, a "tombstone" promotion. It was normal for officers to receive a one-grade promotion upon retirement if they had been awarded a medal for valour in combat. They didn't get the extra pay that would have come with an actual promotion after 1949, and the entire practice was ended in 1959. (Which is why Ned Beach retired as a captain -- his Navy Cross would have made him eligible if these promotions still existed.)

Senator McCain was, in fact, a third generation naval officer. His father, a WWII submariner, achieved the rank of Admiral and served as CinCPac in the late 1960s. His grandfather, who had the same name as the other two, was a vice-admiral when he passed away in 1945.
