With regard to the WWI boats, the situation is a little more complex. Orders were placed for eight merchant U-boats to carry out trade with the U.S. (this was before the U.S. entered the war. All would have been named. When it became apparent that the U.S. would enter the war, the seven surviving merchant U-boats were taken over by the navy. They were then numbered U 151 through U 157.
These and the purpose built U-cruisers also got names. They were named after distinguished lost U-boat commanders. For example, the WWI U 139 was also the Kapitanleutnant Schwieger.
