Greetings All,... I realize this note comes more than two decades (!) late in your conversation, and I hope life has been good to all of you. I am a member and researcher with the "Destroyer Escort Historical Museum (DEHM)," associated with the museum ship USS SLATER (DE-766) in Albany, New York, USA. I believe we have solved this mystery. Leading Seaman Albert Buddendieck was indeed discovered, deceased, by USS LEE FOX (DE-65) on 21 May 1944, fifteen days after the sinking of U-473. Albert was recovered from the sea at position 50 degrees, 45 minutes North/ 24 degrees, 30 minutes West, which is approximately 138 miles W/NW of the position of the sinking of U-473. The seawater temperature was 50 degrees F. Albert's body was still clad in a Draeger Escape Lung when he was discovered. As detailed in the Ship's Log of USS LEE FOX, Albert was buried at sea, in a proper military funeral. The story of the discovery of Albert's body, and our success in identifying him, is a complex tale, and is recorded now in the current (Third Quarter 2022) newsletter of DEHM, "Trim But Deadly." DEHM's website is www.ussslater.org. The full details of our research have been forwarded to the German Ambassador in Washington DC, with a request to forward the details to Albert's descendants, friends, and shipmates. Albert lies in peace, not with his shipmates at the U-473 sinking location, but 138 miles to the W/NW. May he rest in peace. Respectfully,.....Hugh Doyle
