<HTML>Sæll Georg,
Having read literally hundreds of U-boat KTBs, many that spent longer and shorter periods of time in Icelandic waters, I\'ve developed great respect for the German U-boat Arm. These KTBs record numerous instances where Icelandic flag vessels were spared. From the top of my head I recall an incident off the coast of Iceland where a U-boat (can\'t remember which one it was) was about to attack a coastal steamer (The SS Hekla if I\'m not mistaken) when the large Icelandic flag painted on its side was noticed through the periscope. The attack was aborted. That is just one case of many.
In war you shoot first and ask questions afterwards and mistakes are made. Several Spanish ships were sunk by U-boats, and Spain wasn\'t exactly Germany\'s enemy. There are even a number of cases where both ships and aircraft were destroyed by their own forces.
On your \"per capita\" comparison you are right, but then we Icelanders are world leaders in just about anything under the sun - per capita!
Bless,
Ragnar
