I know I am responding to an old post but I just came across this site and figured I would add the information

The SS Richard Olney was piloted by my grandfather, Eric Richter, when it was hit by a torpedo. It didn't strike a mine.

My mother wrote a book about my grandfather and in the book there is a chapter discussing the ship. For his actions after the ship was hit by the torpedo my grandfather received the Merchant Marine Meritorious Service Medal.
