the book you are lookinf for is the U-boat war in the Caribbean, but I don't remember the author. If I'm not mistaken, after the initial first attack hartenstein withdraw to take care of the wounded, then sawed off the blasted portion of the gun and closed in for a secon time. I believe he managed to fire four times befor attracting fire himself, so left the scene for good. The attack had no effect on the refinery, altough at least one of the shell fell within it, which is remarkable when firing from a rolling ship with a shortened gun.
