My father was on frigates & destroyers in the war Battle of Atlantic & Russian convoys he was No 1. One of his ships, I think HMS Active, sank a Vichy submarine also two, possibly three U-boats. One of the officers of one of the U-boats could have been the captain whose binoculars my father had in his study, came with my father to my school in the late 1950's as they had become friends. Anyway all I recall was he was very nice & brought a lot of sweets etc + I was the school hero that day. Was it the sweets? Hmm I do not know? Quite amazing to think back on that. My father died at 53, brother & I have between us all his memorabilia, ship photos etc, sword, uniform, + magazines called 'Ditty Box.'
