U-boats in the Med

<HTML>Sub operations in the Mediterranean differed in some important aspects in comparison to other theatres of conflict. The British U class subs performed surprising well, relying on fast diving times to avoid the ever present threat of air attack. How did German U-boats function in the relatively confined sea space? I understand that the larger British T class boats were relatively easy to surprise on the surface in comparison with the smaller U class. Could U-boats avoid the Straits of Gibralter? Was transportation overland in sections to the French or Italian coasts possible?
The Luftwaffe successfully attacked Allied shipping (including subs) in the Med (perhaps anti-shipping patrols by JU88s could have played a greater part in the Battle for the Atlantic?), I assume that U-boats were subject to close attention from Allied anti-sub planes operating from land and sea. Did Doenitz consider the Med an important theatre of war?
