Dear Pat,

Herewith some information which may help to refresh/unlock your Uncle Henry’s memory of events concerning U-Boats in May 1945.

The carefully arranged PR surrender ceremony in Lisahally (near Londonderry) took place on 14 May (not VE Day), and involved 8 U-Boats which had already surrendered either at sea or in Loch Eriboll, and then been moved to Lisahally from Loch Eriboll via Loch Alsh.

So presumably your Uncle Henry may have been at Lisahally on 14 May.

U-776 surrendered at sea on 14 May, and arrived at Portland on 16 May.

It was then selected for a publicity tour of London, as well as a large number of ports in the south and east of the British Isles.

It left Portland for London on 21 May where it was open to the public until the end of the month. It then sailed to Portsmouth and Southampton, prior to its trip up the east coast.

However U-776 did not visit Plymouth.

The U-Boat which visited Plymouth was U-1023, which had surrendered at sea and arrived at Portland on 10 May. It was selected for the publicity tour of the west coast ports, and left Portland for Plymouth on 25 May, where it was on public display until 4 June.

So, make what you will of that, and I hope that some or all of these facts will help to jog your uncle’s memory.

If he was on board U-776 during its tour to London and the other south and east coast ports, then perhaps he is mixing up Plymouth with Portsmouth, but he may even remember some or all of the other ports that were visited during the long tour.

Finally, I hope this helps, and good luck in finding a way through the maze.

Yours aye,

Derek.
