<HTML>Your grandfather was indeed a very lucky man. His boat was sunk by gunfire and depthcharges after a long hunt on which some 440 depthcharges were dropped as well as some Hedgehogs. The boat was attacked by 4 ships but when 2 of them had left to refuel, U-358 came up to periscopedepth and sank one of the remaining ships HMS Gould. The boat broke surface and was immediately attacked by the last remaining ship HMS Affleck and sunk. After rescuing the HMS Gould survivors, HMS Afflec could only find one man from U-358 in the bad weather conditions and picked him up.

That must have been a very unplesant experience, and I wonder if life on the HMS Affleck was very comfortable for your grandfather after he was picked up. The survivors form the ship his boat had just sunk must have really wanted to have a go at him.
