Hi Joe,
Until about two years ago they used to hold an annual memorial ceremony at the Fort Devens cemetery for the German ant Italian POWs buried there every September. It was always well attended by members of the German and Italian community along with diplomatic dignitaries, a band, etc. Flags and flowers were placed at each grave and we would attend to honor Commander Steinhoff for his family back in Germany and here in the United States. I would attend with the recently deceased Jim Fahey, former head of the Massachusetts Military Archives, along with friends Fred Morin, Myron "Zeke" Blahy, and others. We would also bring flowers for Commander Steinhoff's grave and send pictures back to his family. Others, unknown to us, also left flowers at his grave. Unfortunately, I have not been able to make it to the cemetery in more than a year, but hope to get back there some time soon.
Regards,
Paul
