<HTML>Hi Steve & others
Yeah, you are correct..but there is some more to add!
HMS Hood was recommissioned on the 2nd June 1939. By this
time, Hood was desperately in need of a refit, she was badly
overweight, showing a displacement of 48,365 tons, which meant
that her quarterdeck was continually underwater, as her hull and
the superstructure were showing signs of heavy strain, and her full
speed could only be 25 knots in calm waters. Hood departed to
Devonport for a refit that was to last until the end of May 1940.
The refit included the removal of the remaining 5.5 inch guns, to be
replaced by an additional three twin 4 inch mountings, and 5 UP
mountings. The 5.5 inch spotting tops were converted to the 4inch
fire control postitions. A degaussing coil was fitted for protection
against magnetic mines. At the end of her refit work, a number of
the 5.5 inch mountings were shipped to Ascension Island in the
South Atlantic for local defence. They are still seen there today.
