The Unterseeboot DEUTSCHLAND, placed into service by the Nordeutcherlloyd Lines, became the first submarine to make a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. It sailed into the Chesapeake and up to arrive at Baltimore on July 9th 1916.

This submarine was constructed as a merchant craft during the times but later converted to a torpedo carrying vessel when the US entered WWI the following year.

In 1922 DEUTSCHLAND was scrapped in England after being a war-prize exhibit. Ironically, one of the tugboats that assisted the submarine in and out of Baltimore Harbor and was used to give a tour to, Captain Paul Konig, DEUTSCHLAND'S skipper, is still afloat in Baltimore Harbor. It is the city's 1906 Municipal Harbor Inspection Tug BALTIMORE and can be seen at: [www.steamtug.org]
