My friend Ken is correct in casting doubt on many supposed sinkings of U-boats. Even before I became a military buff, I knew that many supposed sinkings of U-boats and other warships were mistaken.
I quoted Wikipedia because it gave the most detail.
However, the "Century of Flight" website states: "By 1943, Civil Air Patrol coastal patrols had flown 244,600 hours totaling 24 million miles (38.6 million kilometers), summoning help for 91 ships in distress and aiding in the rescue of 363 survivors of submarine attacks. CAP patrols spotted 173 enemy submarines, attacking 57 with bombs or depth charges, damaging 10 and sinking 2."
GlobalSecurity.org reports: "It had reported 173 U-boats sighted, sunk two, and had dropped a total of 83 bombs and depth charges upon 57 of these – with several other "probables."
Several other sites also report that the CAP sank two U-boats. I was surprised, but the US has officially credited them with these two victories.
Best regards, Vince
The Delaware CAP website reports: "Founded on 1 December 1941 by civilian pilots, Civil Air Patrol played a vital part in World War II by flying coastal patrol missions, including the sinking of two German U-boats..."
