The gun crew on the vessel MV UNICOI was credited with
assist in sinking U576 off Cape Hatteras NC on July 15,1942
The U576 had attacked convoy KS 520 sailing south from Norfolk to Key West. U576 fired salvo of torpedoes
sinking SS BLUEFIELDS, and damaging 2 others (CHILORE and
MOWINKEL) broached the surface (it was damaged day
before by aircraft depth charges which shredded one of the
ballast tanks). Gun crew on UNICOI put a 5" shell through
conning tower. U576 was finished off by depth charges from
aircraft from VS-9 (Navy Scout squadron 9) which was
covering the convoy.
