<HTML>Kate,

Günther Buchheim is truly an interesting character. He is reviled by some as a charlatan, applauded by others as a provenience of the truth about the U-boat war .Saying anything about him will no doubt likely ruffle some feathers on this web page just as it does among the U-boat vets themselves.

As you may know, he was a war correspondent & photographer for the Propaganda Ministry. He wrote a book about the U-boat force during the war, entitled: Jäger im Weltmeer (Hunters of the Seven Seas) which impressed Dönitz so much, he wrote the foreword to the book.

But Buchheim eventually began to critize the Nazi leadership and Dönitz in particular in his subsequent books, movies and television shows. (most noteably of course is Das Boot). This is where the lines begin to blur on his character because the U-boat veterans, themselves, are concretely divided between those who think Dönitz could do no wrong and those who think he handled the end of the war poorly, sacrificing his mens\' lives for no good reason.

It is that controversy, which Buchheim has stirred up that has made him arguably the most notable and famous name regarding U-boats in the world.

My opinion of him? I believe he presents another side to the U-boat story. His view is not always right, not always wrong and usually best if taken with a grain of salt.

But you really do need to buy Vause\'s book!
