Just browsing idly through a Bundeswehr Dictionary on the web, and the following appeared -

Does it then appear that `Muschkote` might politely be translated as `mouse-droppings` - perhaps with reference to the way in which a recruit was treated ?

Even if that`s the case, it still doesn`t answer Jeff`s - and my - question .......!
