\"Germanness\" was determined by ethnicity and not location of birth, which explains why certain officers were allowed to serve that were born in Eastern Europe. A non-ethnic German obtaining German citizenship would be very difficult if not impossible. Even to this day, it is not particularly easy.

Interestingly, the whole topic of ethnic/physical standards in Nazi Germany undergoes a slow transformation as the war progresses; manpower shortages and total war have a way of doing that. The Waffen SS had, for example, a Bosnian Muslim division...</HTML>
